Family Learning comprises a series of courses which are designed to complement and support children’s learning by helping parents or carers to be more effective when they help their children at home. The emphasis is on having fun and learning at the same time.
Family Learning courses aim to:
• Help parents/carers to develop an understanding of their children’s development and education.
• Raise the attainment of adults.
• Build confidence in family members of all ages.
• Help parents or carers with ICT, Basic Skills (Literacy and Numeracy) and ESOL needs.
• Address progression routes for adults through accreditation and the service provided by Information Advice and Guidance (IAG) advisors.
• Provide opportunities for all family members to develop and enhance skills that allow them to integrate fully as members of their local communities.
Courses on offer:
Workshops 2-4 hours
To introduce parents/carers and children to new teaching i.e. at transition stages or to introduce new methods or concepts to parents.
Workshops are also run for Parents/carers only.
Introductory programmes
• Introducing play and language for 0-3 year olds (9-13 hours) for parents/carers and children.
• Keeping Up with the Children (9-13 hours).
• Literacy, Numeracy, ICT or ESOLbased parents/carers only courses.
Short Programmes
• Family Literacy or Numeracy (30-49 hours).
• Early start for 0-3 year olds. Fun for babies.
Parents/carers and children
Play with language 4-5 year olds.
Keeping Up with the Children. Plus:
Family Finance, Healthy Eating, Get it Together IT.
Intensive programmes
Family Numeracy, Literacy, ICT, language (72-96 hours).
ESOL-based programmes for all ages - parents/carers and children groups.
First Steps Workshops
A family literacy programme designed to help parents/carers to be more effective when they read with their Year 1 children.
Family Learning programmes are held in schools, early years’ centres, libraries, Hendon Leisure Centre (delivered in partnership with the NHS Primary Care Trust), the Sweetsway Community Centre and Community Centres in the Borough.
